He gave a brief introduction on how dentistry was perceived poorly in the 18th century due to not being able to place long lasting fillings, and how things have changed today.

The fact is that as a dentist, it is important to listen to your patients to discover what they want or need. Although day to day, patients often do not experience any pain, they are surprised when their dentist finds cavities in their mouths. On the technology front, Dr Molinar explained that new digital x-rays expose you to less radiation, and can be easily enlarged and shown to the patient, helping to keep them informed of findings. Some cavities do not show up on either regular film or digital x-rays, and are often very small, yet should be fixed right away to preserve tooth structure. Fixing tiny cavities is quick, painless, and inexpensive.
Dr Molinar reviewed the Air Abrasion Unit that he uses for these smaller cavities but most of the audience had never had one used on them. The technology has been around since the 1940's and it is similar to a miniature sand blaster. This allows decay to be removed without the need for a numbing injection. Children as well as adults really like this, although it is messy, patients like the fact that they can go about their day without being numb. Dr. Molinar likes it because it allows the patient to feel their bite allowing him to get an accurate and exacting adjustment if needed so that a 2nd visit to adjust their bite is not needed.
Dr. Molinar feels trust is the most important thing in any relationship and points out that the advice from a professional, whether a mechanic, lawyer or a dentist, if you don't trust them enough to follow their advice you will often end up far worse off. The sooner that problems are found and taken care of, the less work, discomfort, and cost the patient will experience. Work with people you trust and be sure to understand what they are doing and why.
