Assure a Smile Celebrates Dental Health Month

Miami Dentist Ted Herrmann reminds patients that February is a time for spreading dental awareness and education, especially among young children.

MIAMI, FL, February 19, 2011 /Dental PR News/ -- This month, deemed National Childrens Dental Health Month, is a time for parents to reflect on the role they have in their child's knowledge and practice of oral hygiene. The initiative comes in light of recent research that indicates over 40% of children under age 5 have tooth decay. Miami Dentist Ted Herrmann reminds patients that February is a time for spreading dental awareness and education, especially among young children.

Miami dentist and founder of Assure a Smile, Ted Herrmann resides in South Miami with his wife, Esther, and his two young children. "As a parent, I know firsthand the importance of helping children to develop good oral hygiene habits at an early age," says Dr. Herrmann. âEURœChildren who take care of their teeth become adults who take care of their teeth. You can teach good habits just as easily as bad ones, and good habits stay around for just as long."

Dr. Herrmann is no stranger to patient education. In fact, the practice he founded has been built on the need to convey better dental education to patients of all ages. Dr. Herrmann has a long history of community involvement, having teamed hitw organizations like South Florida Head Start to teach children about proper hygiene. Now, in the midst of National Childrens Dental Health Month, the Miami dental professional offers parents the following tips to help them in teaching good oral hygiene habits to their children:

1) It is never too early to start practicing good oral hygiene. Even infants who generally have no teeth need the gums in their mouths cleaned regularly with a soft-bristled tooth brush and water. This works to eliminate sugar from formula or milk that may linger in the mouth and cause infection.

2) As your child grows, so too should your involvement in their hygiene. This means teaching children to brush each tooth well, floss-out the food particles that become wedged between teeth, and rinse with chemical free mouth rinse each morning and evening. However, teaching good oral hygiene doesnâEUR t stop at the bathroom walls. It includes encouraging children to eat well and choose low-sugar foods as snacks.

3) Use systems of reward and punishment. Teaching good oral hygiene habits is just like teaching a child the difference between right and wrong. Use positive incentives to motivate the child to want to maintain good oral hygiene.
