Causes of Bad Breath Are Numerous

There are many causes of bad breath. Certain foods, health conditions and habits are among the main causes of bad breath. In many cases, learning proper dental hygiene can substantially improve your halitosis problem.

/Dental PR News/ - February 29, 2008 - Bad breath is one of those topics that no one likes to talk about, but, for many people, it is a constant, embarrassing problem that needs to be talked about and treated by a cosmetic dentist. Store shelves are over-flowing with tooth pastes, mouthwashes, mints, and other products that guarantee fresh breath, but for many people, these products, no matter how often they are used, simply do not help. These products may temporarily cure halitosis (bad breath), but they are not a permanent fix.

What Causes Bad Breath?

There are many causes of bad breath. Certain foods, health conditions and habits are among the main causes of bad breath. In many cases, learning proper dental hygiene can substantially improve your halitosis problem.

• Food: The natural breakdown of food particles can cause a bad odor. Eating foods containing certain oils is another source of bad breath. Onions and garlic are the two best known culprits, but there are many other vegetables and spices that can cause bad breath. After foods are digested and the pungent oils from the foods are absorbed into your bloodstream, they are carried to your lungs and are given off in your breath until the food is eliminated from your body.
• Dental problems: Poor dental hygiene and periodontal disease can be another source of bad breath. When you don't brush and floss daily, food particles remain in your mouth, collect bacteria, and give off hydrogen sulfur vapors, and a colorless film of bacteria (known as plaque) forms on your teeth. When this plaque is not brushed away, it can irritate your gums and cause tooth decay. Irritated gums will result in a condition called gingivitis.
• Diseases: Chronic lung infections and lung abscesses can produce foul-smelling breath. Kidney failure can cause a urine-like odor, and liver failure may cause a fishy odor. People with uncontrolled diabetes often have a fruit breath odor. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition involving the acids in your stomach and can also cause bad breath.
• Mouth, nose, throat conditions: Sinus infections can cause bad breath due to the collection of nasal discharge in the back of your throat. Strep throat, tonsillitis and mononucleosis can all cause bad breath as can bronchitis and upper respiratory infections.
• Dry mouth: Having saliva in your mouth is a natural way to help cleanse and moisten your mouth. A dry mouth enables dead cells to accumulate and cause odor. Morning breath is caused by the dry mouth that occurs naturally overnight. Some medications and smoking can lead to a chronically dry mouth. Some people even have problems with their salivary glands.
• Tobacco: Smoking dries out your mouth and causes a bad odor. Tobacco users are also more likely to have periodontal disease, which, as mentioned earlier, causes bad breath, also.
• Severe dieting: When someone fasts, chemicals breakdown (ketoacidosis) and the dieter's breath may take on an unpleasant fruity smell.
